Most of the uncomplicated mods require money,
such as, upgrading the steering servo and ESC. when you upgrade the speedo (ESC) then you can get a hotter (better) motor. my favorite would be the 10 turn single flat wire. i cant remeber the brand. try Reedy or Team Orion.
Better batteries are also a good upgrade.
if you have the avalible funds, a Li-po battery with a brushless motor system would be the best way to go, if your into extreem speed.
